Thought for the New Year 2016: "...Beyond this Christmas Night"

An Irish Christmas Blessing

Beautiful words in this beautiful song, may they stay with you for the New Year and always!
Happy New Year everyone, Welcome 2016!

Now may the fragrance of his peace
Soar through your heart like the dove released:
Hide in His wings, oh weary, distant soul,
He'll guide your spirit home.
And may His love poured from on high
Flow to the depths of your deepest sigh;
Oh come and drink from the only living stream
And on His shoulder lean.
And may the hope that will not deceive
Through every pain bring eternal ease;
There is no night that can steal the promises
His coming brings to us.
So may His joy rush over you;
Delight in the path He has called you to;
May all your steps walk in Heaven's endless light
Beyond this Christmas night.

Hallels: Our Exclusive Chat with Father Ray Kelly the Singing Priest

By Timothy Yap Apr 03, 2015 06:54 PM EDT

Father Ray Kelly is not just your average priest.  He has a brand new record that has just been released in the US now via Capitol Distribution.  The priest came to the public's notice when in April last year, a video surfaced on YouTube of an unassuming Catholic priest singing the classic "Hallelujah" at a wedding ceremony. Father Ray Kelly renders the song in near pitch-perfection, letting slip an impish grin at one point when the impressed audience's titters become audible.
"I didn't mean to shock you," he says, taking the pulpit to thunderous applause. Now at nearly 40 million views, Father Ray's "Original Big surprise for Bride and Groom...Chris and Leah O'Kane" has led to a record deal for his debut album,"Where I Belong."
Already out in Ireland and Germany, the 12-track effort arrives in the U.K. next week and stateside on Mar. 9 via Universal imprint Manhattan Records. A mix of originals, covers, Celtic songs and church hymns, Where I Belong was recorded in Father Ray's parochial home and at a studio in Vienna last year.
Hallels:  When you sang Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" for a wedding ceremony, did you expect the song to become so big?  And why did you decide to sing "Hallelujah"?
When I sung the song Hallelujah at the wedding, I just did what I have often done before. So I was not expecting the song to be put up on Youtube or indeed to have such a world wide reaction as there was. I sung that song because personalizing it to suit a weedding makes it special for the bride and groom.
Hallels:  What happened after your rendition of "Hallelujah" went viral?  How did you end up with a record deal?
After the Youtube clip went viral, the phone and my email started hopping like mad. Radio and T V stations from all over the world wanted to speak to me live on their shows and get my reaction. For week I was been sought after, which resulted in T V appearances in Ireland & Germany. Following that Sony & Universal Music in Ireland made contact with me with the possibility of a recording contract. Eventually Universal Music won out with recording the album Where I belong.
Hallels:  Was it a challenge when it came time to choose songs for your album?  What type of songs were you looking for?
Choosing the music for the album was pretty much straight forward. We wanted the album to have a strong Irish flavour musically to it. I love Tears in Heaven and Everybody Hurts and was delighted to be able to record them. I also wanted the album to have a strong sense of Church and my faith as a Catholic Priest, hence Amazing grace, How great thou Art and How Marvellous. Obviously we wanted Hallelujah on it and when word came through that we had permission to record it with the new wedding words I was so happy. There is a new wedding song on the album as well specially written for me called Together, forever with love. and the title track was also written for me called Where I belong. And being Irish the obvious song were Danny Boy, Galway Bay and Isle of Hope, Isle of tears.
Hallels:  Now that your new record is released in the US, do you have any plans to do a tour here?
There is no plan in place yet to do an U S tour but it would be my ultimate dream to be on tour in the U S, so hopefully down the road, please God.
Hallels:  Has your congregation been supportive of your singing career? And do you sing songs from your new album in your own parish?
The balance of being a singer and a parish priest is working well at the moment, once I have plenty of notice of my music appointments there is no problem fitting them in. I am a priest for the last 25 and a half years and I love my job, but I equally now lover being a singer and performing, so as long as I can the two will be very much part of my life.
Hallels:  Has your congregation been supportive of your singing career? And do you sing songs from your new album in your own parish?
Yes nearly every sunday at my masses I sing one/ two songs from my album, usually one or two of the spiritual songs. The people of my parish have been very supportive and proud of their parish priest been put on to the big stage like this, as they say isn't it putting Oldcastle ( my parish ) on the map.
Hallels:  For our readers who would like to purchase your new album or/and find out more about you, where can they go?
My new album is available with Amazon and also available in Walmarts, U S, and also Barnes & Noble

About Hallels

Hallel is a chant of praise consisting of Psalms 113 through 118 from the Old Testament, used during various biblical festivals and holidays including Passover.
Hallelujah also spelled halleluiah, halleluyah, and the Greek and Latin form alleluia are transliterations of the Hebrew word הַלְּלוּיָהּ meaning "Praise ye Yah" or "Praise Jah, you people". The last syllable is from the first two letters of the name of God, YHWH (also transcribed JHVH). "Praise Jah" is therefore a shortened form of "Praise Yahweh" or, in another transliteration of the name, "Praise Jehovah"
Hallels is a shortcut for more Hallelujahs.
Hallels.com has been running since 2012 for the purpose of serving the Christian community as a Christian music web portal.
Hallels.com is a news website focusing on general entertainment, but especially with a niche in Christian music and Christian entertainment news.

Behind the Scenes: The Art of Rehearsal

Practice, Practice, Practice

Two links to videos of rehearsals during the recording of Father Ray Kelly's first album Where I Belong during summer of 2014. Really give the feeling of how much behind the scenes work goes into a recording or a concert.
Amazing Grace was recorded in Oldcastle in a new recording "box" built by Universal Ireland right in the Parochial House. The choir rehearsed in St Brigid's Church.

Meaning of Christmas 2015 With Father Ray Kelly

The Meaning of Christmas

Father Ray Kelly speaks of Christmas in this Associated Press video. Check the Video Vault page for more videos, new and old.

Christmas Interview with Yorkshire Times

Interview: Father Ray Kelly
By Jeremy Williams-Chalmers, Arts Correspondent

Hi Father Ray, before we talk about your new album An Irish Christmas Blessing, can you tell me about what Christmas means to you.

I love the whole festivities. Christmas was always a special time, especially as child growing up from Santa Claus to the Christmas music and Christmas shopping. It is a special, magic time. It is also a bit of a family time and a time for telling people what they mean to you. It is a time of hope in a world that is so fragmented and broken, it is a time we can take out to express and feel all of that.

So it is a time of togetherness and reflection, a time to spread the message of love...

Exactly. The message of love. The Christian message as well. There is a nothing better way to share your love for your family than by getting together and sharing your life and gifts. It is that special time. It is magical as we don't do it often enough, but maybe if we did it too often it would become too familiar.

Can you tell us a little about the thought behind the album, An Irish
Christmas Blessing...

When it was decided that I would do a Christmas album, I wanted to do some of the Christmas songs that mean something to me - like O Holy Night, Silent Night and Come All Ye Faithful. Those songs resonate with people and bring a lot of memories of times gone by and loved ones that have now passed on from this life. I wanted to also include something a bit different like Joy Has Dawned and An Irish Christmas Blessing itself, which wouldn't be overly familiar to people.

Do you think the best Christmas songs are about the message or the
sense of nostalgia?

Once we hear Christmas music it does evoke memories for all of us, which resonates a hope for the future. It is positive future, it brings light into people's lives.

The album has a balance of religious and commercial songs. Do you think Christmas is about a balance of the religious and commercial aspects?

I think people will never get away from commercialism of Christmas. In Ireland now Christmas begins soon after Halloween. Christmas lights go up and people do their shopping earlier, but because of that Christmas is like an oasis in a desert. People want it a little longer. Then you ask yourself what they want, what is Christmas giving them? It gives that message of love, hope and peace. Those are wonderful gifts to experience and embrace.

How will you be spending Christmas this year?

I always spend a bit of time with family, which I don't get to do a lot of in the year. Christmas is short for me this year, as it is on a Friday and I am back working on Saturday and Sunday, so I am having a short stopover at home with my brother and sisters and their children and grandchildren. Spending time with them and sharing Christmas with them. Showing them what they mean to me.

Lastly, what is your favourite memory of Christmas?

Favourite memory was growing up and Santa coming to us. I think childhood memories are the ones that always come back to us. We would always head out to mass and almost wish mass would be over so we could head back to see what Santa had brought us. We'd open the presents and play with the toys. Those are wonderful memories. But as you grow up, those Christmas memories change. My parents are long dead, so Christmas memories are those special moments that I would share with them.

When we were recording the record with Nigel Wright, the producer, we were talking about what Christmas meant to me. He helped me when I was recording those songs to get those images into the songs. All those feelings from my own experience were with me when I was singing those songs.
